Name of the project: Aldea Infantil Orfanato Juan Pablo II

Location: Cusco

Not Included

Project Description: Aldea Infantil is an orphanage for children ages one to seventeen, with the majority falling between eight and twelve years old. The orphanage contains eight houses, each accommodating between six to ten children. Each child living within the orphanage has its own story to tell. Some of them still have parents or family, but unfortunately extreme poverty or too many other siblings have rendered it impossible for their families to care for them. For this reason as well as others, the project was built to offer these children the opportunity to live with a foster mother at the orphanage. Within this “substitute family” the children grow up and live a relatively normal life.

Volunteer Responsibilities: As a volunteer you can assist the foster-mothers in one of the houses with various tasks. These tasks may include helping the children complete their school work, creating activities for the children as well as playing with them. Volunteers in the past have also enjoyed creating a special class to teach the children their own language. At times volunteers may even care for the children while the foster-mothers run errands or buy supplies outside the orphanage.  In addition, Aldea Infantil cares for some children with disabilities. Volunteers may choose to work specifically with these children by giving them special attention and assistance. If desired, you can also rotate between the different houses and offer help where needed.

Minimum Stay Required: 4 weeks

Volunteers Needed:

• Psychology

• Social workers

• Teachers

• Volunteers without specific studies

Required Level of Spanish: Basic to Intermediate

Typical Workday Hours: 3pm – 6pm, (if you desire to work with the older children, the program begins after school) or it is also possible to work in the morning with the younger children (ages one to three years)

Observations and Recommendations:

It’s important in this project to be proactive and to work independently because there will not be much guidance. The higher your level of Spanish, the easier it will be to communicate and work with the children and the better your volunteer experience will be. Donations of any size are also very much appreciated and needed.
