Name of the project: Centro Gerontológico San Francisco

Location: Cusco

Not Included

Project Description: This project was founded by and is led by the Catholic Church with ten nuns, a psychologist, a physiotherapist, and nurses and doctors working daily with the elderly.  The San Francisco de Asís Gerontological Center houses almost 240 elderly. The center is divided into two areas, one for the women and another for the men. The majority of the residents came to live in the center because their families live in extreme poverty and are no longer able to care for them. San Francisco Center contains residents with varying levels of health. Some residents are in very good health while others suffer from both acute and chronic conditions. The project believes in unrestricted movement, with each resident free to leave at any moment.

Volunteer Responsibilities: There are a wide variety of tasks available for the volunteers to participate within this project. Each task revolves around caring for the elderly. Examples of responsibilities include helping with activities of daily living such as assisting with eating during meal times, bathing, grooming, dressing, and transportation. Volunteers may also organize various events such as board games, painting, live music and dancing, and taking leisure walks. If you feel comfortable, you may also choose to organize a field trip outside the project to bring change to their normal routines. However, the most valuable gift you can give the residents is your personal attention. Many of the residents have lived interesting lives and truly enjoying sharing their experiences with volunteers. Depending on your professional experience and your level of Spanish, you may also choose to work here as a nurse, doctor, psychologist or physiotherapist.
