Name of the project: Escuela Don Jose de San Martin

Location: Cusco

Project Description: Don Jose de San Martin is a school officially recognized as a special education center containing 250 children, ages four to twenty years old, with disabilities. The majority of the children have various mental disabilities such as Down syndrome and autism. There are also about thirty deaf children enrolled in the school, however, as of yet there are no special classes geared towards their specific disability. The school is composed of three sections: a primary school, secondary school and technical school where adults ages twenty to forty with a disability can learn weaving, woodworking, baking, or craft making. The school is funded by the state and offers an education through a variety of subjects such as mathematics, literature and art. Working in this project are approximately ten teachers, a social worker, a psychologist, a psychotherapist and two therapists.

Volunteer Responsibilities: As a volunteer, you can assist the teachers with their classes. You can help in the development of educational materials or the creation of practical projects such as weaving, cooking or making crafts. If your level of Spanish allows it, you may also lead small groups and set up workshops where you can teach the children how to paint or create art and music. The volunteers are also responsible for teaching practical skills such as basic hygiene and how to buy products at the store.
